2. HLJ has started a Gunpla contest - and some nice prices!
there are 2 categories:
-Category 1, video: shoot a video (3 min. maximum) about Gunpla. However, NO how-to's, reviews etc. - it has to be something cinematic - stop motion or whatever
This is your chance to show us what your Gunpla can really do. Make us laugh, make us cry, but keep it short: 3 minutes max. The video needs to feature a Gundam kit that you built. How you set the scene or create the story arc is totally up to. Videos submitted without a Gundam in them will not accepted. No tutorials or "how to videos", only cinematic magic.
What's the prize? 1st prize is the MG The-O - 2nd is the 1/144 RG Gundam
-Category 2, photography - this category divides itself into 3 subcatogries
for each sub category (custom Gunpla, out of box Gunpla, Diorama Contest), the 1st prize will be the MG V Dash Gundam and 1/144 RG Gundam for the 2nd.
However, the best of all 3 subcategories is able to win the MG The-O aswell.
Participants shall submit their entries before August 16. You can enter both categories, however, you can only enter ONE subcatogry + you can only win once.
Still at HLJ - HLJ's sister site,'Hobby Link TV' has started a new series - episode 1 is about the different grades of gunpla - check it out!
Last, but not least: A new GoldenEye Game is announced! OMG! I loved GoldenEye on the N64, I will probably get this game right on release :D
Judging from the trailer, it's (mainly) a remake of the original goldeneye - either it is because I haven't play Goldeneye for years, or there is just a little bit of new content, however, instead of a virtual Pierce Brosnan, you play the new Denial Craig. I hope there will be some new content, like a co-op mode, new levels, etc.
Is It a Car? Is It a Anime Toy?
Car models,... love or hate - although I'm, as always, satisfied with my work, I won't lay a hand on another car model that soon - sure, building it was fun, but I need a better gloss top coat before I start with another Itasha/Car Model.
The parting lines on the tires are a pain - you can't just cut them, since the tire is made of soft rubber. Other than this, Aoshima did a good job with this kit - everything fits nicely but sometimes, I think they could have added a feature or two to the model kit.
Example 1: the Mirrors - as you can see on the 2nd Picture, you get a second set of rims - why did they include them? first thought: as a option, if you don't like those chrome ones like those that I used - second though: because the chrome rims plate does not contain the parts for the side mirrors - come on Aoshima - you were able to chrome them an give them some nice mirror effect, but rather you expect the average modeler to paint the black mirror pieces, included on the runner with the black rims?
Example 2: traditional injection plastic kits, like this one, require clue to finish - sure, Fixing seam lines and such, I'm used to clue my Gunpla - however, the fog lights or whatever they are, need to be painted from the inside with silver - afterwards, you clue the lens into place - a little piece of art how the parts look:

as you can see, Aoshima didn't bother to achieve snap fit assembly for those parts - instead, you have to glue the part into place, and the clue solving some of the silver color.
Other than this, there was one additional thing, I found to be a bit frustrating - used to Gunpla, I'm used to trust the instructions regarding the decal (that the images are all in the same scale). In this case however, some images, like the red Haruhi silhouette, or the SOS団 on the left side, were much smaller in the instructions than on the decal sheet - as a result, I didn't apply the Haruhi silhouette. Why exactly? I didn't installed the windows back than, but the decal would have to be placed, partially, on the window as well - unlike shown in the manual. Sure, Aoshima claimed the decal guide to be a pure example, but I wanted to recreate the same decal work like it 'should' have. Well, but you have plenty of Decals left,... ItaZaku?
Of course it wasn't all bad with this kit - one think I found surprisingly was a 'Masking Seal' - basically really broad masking tape, but with pre-cut masking seals so you can mask the front and rear window, prior painting the surroundings with black.
Very useful, espacially for cars like the RX-7, which feature a lot of curves. Masking this by hand might be a sisyphus task
All my Haruhi stuff on one spot! Although I
btw.: Don't forge - HLJ has a 'free express shipping' campaign under way!
... what is this 't' doing here?
Some Photo's
Ok, in some corners of the photos, you can see some parts of the background, but you should be able to easily edit them yourself.
below, you find some small preview images, but there's also a >.rar file on RapidShare<, containing all photos unedited.

Small Scale War - or something like that
If you happen to be part or subscriber of the gunpla community in Youtube, you might watched rrobbert184, testing the 1/100HG Wing Gundam's bird mode's flight capability without propulsion ('smashing').
For some reason, it started some kind of war with 3 factions - the rrobbertians from 184, the Primers from 92 and those who don't really care.
Well, how did it started? Of course, Prime92 subscribed to rrobbert184 and watched some of his reviews (but said that she watched his videos less frequently lately). As a matter of fact, she watched the 'HG 1/100 [Wing Gundam]'s fate after getting a MG', and this is where it all started.
She didn't seem to like to see the HG 1/100 Wing Gundam getting smashed - what reason? Well, according to her comment below the video, she stated:
Wow......and people get [mad] at me for having knockoffs. I hope you don't actually consider yourself a gundam fan. [You're] just a fan of new and shinny things. Can't
even appreciate the older stuff. I'm [unsubscribing] now. For the simple reason that you don't care, so why should I?
As a result, there are 2 sides to choose from, or just spectate.
the Primers basically share Prime92's comment/opinion - and the rrobbertians, who think that Prime92 should a) stop complaining, since she reviews quiet some number of knockoffs, and/or b) it was/is rrobbert's property, and therefore he has the right to do anything he want with it.
So far, rrobbert184's official statement is as follows:
Everyone, after logging in a couple days after upping this, I have to say there was a lot more reaction than I figured! For people who enjoyed the [video], I hope it was a little bit funny, and for those of you who don't think model's should be treated this way, I suppose I understand why you'd feel that way. Anyway, this was more fun [than] putting it in a box forever. But no comments about the two cameras?? Or the horrible aim?
So, what is this war about? It feels kinda like the 30 year war - Protestants against the Catholics. Basically, both are the same (both Christian / gunpla fans), but some one started to think, that the one way just can't be right. In this case, it's the discussion what exactly a Gundam/Gunpla fan is/should be.
I agree with Prime92 that you should appreciate old kits, may it be the 1/100 HG Wing Gundam or the 1/144 NG PsyCommu Zaku. On the other hand, I have to stick with the argument b) from the rrobbertians, that it is his property. Rrobbert184 wants to collect all lead Gundams in MG scale (or 1/100 HG/NG if an MG is unavailable), so why should he keep it, after getting the MG Wing Gundam? Some rrobbertians argue, he should have modded it - but seriously - rrobbert184? He is neither painting nor cluing his kits, which is essential for modding.
IMHO, the rrobbertians and primers should bury the hatchet and transfer the discussion about how to define a gunpla fan to a neutral forum. A growing community also results in introducing this hobby to others, and I think they shouldn't find themself in a community torn apart because of this discussion, which sometimes is fought on a level, embarrassing for both sides. (Really, posting comments which is basically just a flame isn't helping anyone)
The hot phase of this war seems to be over for now, but I wonder how the aftermath will be like.
